What's new on the KP3 Web ?

January 22^nd, 2003
- The KP3 web server www-kp3.gsi.de is now a virtual host on the central linux web server www-linux.gsi.de. The CVS pserver was also migrated.
June 28^th, 1999
- Enabled the `speling' module of Apache, which helps to cover-up most of the problems of mis-cased URL's.
June 21^th, 1999
- The alias name www-kp3.gsi.de points now to kp3pck.gsi.de, the new web server is now active.
- Enabled serving of user documents on the kp3pck server for the currently active KPIII Linux accounts. The URL->file mapping is

    //www-kp3.gsi.de/~user/...  --> ~user/web-docs/...
```
  as it is on AIX and analoguous to the VMS setup.
June 18^th, 1999
- The whole web site was moved from VMS to Linux, from AXP607 to kp3pck, from the OSU software to Apache.
- The server on AXP607, installed on August 19,1997, will stay active as http://axp607.gsi.de/ and serve some VMS specific things.
- Allmost all files have been moved.

- The whole authentication scheme had to be modified due to the new environment. The old password will not work on the new server in most cases. Contact Walter F.J. Müller in case of access problems.

- Upgraded to server V3.0
- Server executes now in it's final configuration, in the dedicated account kp3http_serv.
September 9^th, 1997
- Redone the authorization for most protected files. All ALADiN group members can use the VMS user name and password for authentication.
September 8^th, 1997
- The WWW file area (kp3$broot:[www...]) on the VAX cluster has been removed.
August 29^th, 1997
- Setup dirctory browsing like it was done previously, using the html_getnavigator procedure.
- Use [.web-docs] rather than [.webdocs] as user document area to be really consistent with the AIX usage.
- All scripts have been converted.
- The server on AXP607 is now fully operational.
- The server on VSBZ is shutdown.
August 26^th, 1997
- Disabled dirctory browsing. The simple default handling of the OSU server produces names and links in upper case. This causes duplicate entries of documents in search engines (one in lower case when achors are followed and one or more in uppercase when the directories are followed).
August 22^nd, 1997
- The handling of user document areas is now handled like on the AIX system. The [.webdocs] subdirectory of every user is now exported by the www-kp3 server. If you want to setup your private web pages simply

  Every file in the [.webdocs] subtree can now be accessed with the URL prefix "//www-kp3.gsi.de/~user/" where user is your VMS account name. For example:

   //www-kp3.gsi.de/~traut/papers/new_stuff.html

August 19^th, 1997
- The KP3 WWW server has been moved from the VAX to the AXP cluster. At the same time, a new and much better performing server software has been installed. The IP alias www-kp3.gsi.de has been updated today to point to the new server.
  The area kpw_root, which holds most of the exported documents, has been moved from the VAX to the AXP file system on August 11^th, the logical has been updated as well.
  The user document areas (e.g. /~mueller/) are now mapped to the [.webdocs] subtree, like on the AIX system. Note, that they where mapped to [.www] in the old setup. All active user document areas have been copied today from the VAX to the AXP file system into the respective [.webdocs] subdirectories.
  The new server software (OSU/2.3) supports multiple threads and keep-alive connections and exhibits a much better performance than the outdated CERN/3.0pre6vms3 server software used on the VAX cluster.
  The script handling under the new server software is significantly different from the old one and not all scripts have been modified yet.
  Also, there are some differences in the authentication for protected documents and the way directory requests are handled.

- The HTML Version 2 specification , especially the DTD Reference, states that values of tag attributes must be enclosed in quotes. This wasn't done in all our documents. All .html files on kpw_root:[*...] were modified to conform to the standart, main changes were to fix

- A usage summary of all KP3 POOL and TEMP disks is now available by selecting the root name in the VMS-Disk section of the KP3 Computing Hardware Summary. Example: AL_POOL0.
- I have started a KP3 Figure Repository. The pictures of Joachim's and Peter's thesis are now available as PostScript files. Just look into the list of PhD Theses and you'll find references to the figures. Voli's and Gerd's thesis pictures and Claudius' diploma thesis pictures will follow as time allows.
