What's new in KP3 computing ? (ARCHIVE 9506)

• June 28th/29th, 1995
  
  • Software updates where done of the AXP cluster (on 28th) and the VAX cluster (on 29th). Main changes:
    • A new UCX version (V3.2) (Note, that this software was already in use on VSBZ and all its satellites till June 8th).
    • A new command for printing (POP).
    • An update of the MOTIF software.

• June 20th, 1995
  
  • Switched to CERN Library version V95A on the AXP cluster ! The CMS libraries ULIB, ALIB, S114 and S117 got recompiled and the S114 and S117 PAW images relinked. The CERNLOGIN default is now V95A.
    Note, on the VAX cluster we still use V94B !

  • The CMS libraries AMGR and ASOFT were moved to the AXP Cluster.
  • The VSBZ disks were defragmented.
  • The nightly backup of OS9 disks was discontinued.

• June 19th, 1995
  
  • Connected node AXP625 to FDDI.

• June 9th, 1995
  
  • Relocated VSBZ and AXP612 from room 4.166 to the printer room.
  • The SCSI configuration of AXP612 was changed:
    • disk DL126: DKB200 --> DKA300
    • disk DL063: DKD200 --> DKB200
    • disk DL109: DKD300 --> DKB300
    • 2nd tape: MKA600 --> MKD100
    The new configuration is:

• June 8th, 1995
  
  • Moved the `online' DLT drive to AXP612 (now mka600:)
  • A new UCX version (V3.2) was installed on VSBZ, hopefully solving all the email problems we had lately (see May 15th).

• June 6th, 1995
  
  • The output of the MVS command DFILES changed, displaying now instead of HSMOPR the volume name of the shelved tape in the format HMxxxx or OPxxxx. Fixed all tools based on the listing obtaimed with mvs_files_getlist.

• May 20th, 1995
  
  • The ALADiN group got a 4 Gbyte disk on the central AXP cluster ( AXP601/AXP602). It is setup as a TEMP disk (no backup, automatic deletion of old files). The logical name is a01_temp0: and it can be used in exactly the same way as al_temp0:. This disk is the scratch area (used for temporary files, located by sys$scratch) for processes on AXP601 or AXP602.

• May 15th, 1995
  
  • All emails send by or received from node VSBZ using SMTP, in other words all Internet Mails, were lost without error indication between Friday May 12th (or even earlier) and Monday May 15th. Nodes other than VSBZ and DECnet mail were not affected.

• May 11th, 1995
  
  • Added another (borrowed) DLT2000 to AXP612 as MKA600:.

• May 9th, 1995
  
  • The central AXP systems axp601 and axp602 got additional DSSI interfaces. The shutdown on 7:30 made the queue manager unavailable and caused all job creations to fail:

        response on submit:

        -JBC-E-JOBQUEDIS, system job queue manager is not running
        response on synchronize:

• April 29th, 1995
  
  • Tested disk I/O performance of vaious AXP disk configurations.

• April 27th, 1995
  
  • Increased rjoblim sysgen parameter from 16 to 32 on axp612. This will allow 32 set host sessions and prevent "connect to network object rejected" errors.

• April 18th, 1995
  
  • Node VSBL got fixed.

• April 12th, 1995
  
  • Died: Node VSBL, of unknown causes, 9:26. bl_pool0 unavailable.

• April 2nd, 1995
  
  • The file executed by the command publiclogin, which is used in login_aladin, had been protected on the VAX cluster at 1-APR-1995:19:50. Reason unknown, but it happend on April fools day... Consequence: all login's and especially all batch jobs failed.
    I have reset the protection on 2-APR-1995:10:20 and hope nobody fools around with it again.

• March 31st, 1995
  
  • Undid patch SCSI driver patch CSCPAT_1179010 hoping that this puts an end to the VSBZ crashes.
  • Tested using the new HTTP proxy server www-proxy.gsi.de. Its caching substantially improves the access to remote resources. But since all requests are routed through is, it actually slows down local accesses and, worst of all, blows the access control scheme used for the KP3 server. So its use will not be the default setup in login_aladin.com.
    The proxy server will, however, become very useful with MOSIAC version 2.6, to be relased soon, which has no_proxy feature. In case you want to try with MOSAIC 2.4 anyway:

      set the DCL symbols
      $ http_proxy   == "http://www-proxy.gsi.de:8080/"
      $ ftp_proxy    == "http://www-proxy.gsi.de:8080/"
      $ gopher_proxy == "http://www-proxy.gsi.de:8080/"
      and restart MOSAIC
    

• March 21st, 1995
  
  • The XTerminal fonts aliases were changed (by E.Hocks). The DECTerm fonts should have the `normal' size again ( normal = what they looked like before end of January...).

• March 16th, 1995
  
  • Second try to exchange the faulty VSBZ system disk $9$DKA0:.
  • All KP3 LAT services were renamed.

• March 13th, 1995
  
  • The AXP Cluster hung from Saturday morning till Monday morning. This was caused by a broken disk controller, unfortunately the one with the quorum disk.

• March 3rd, 1995
  
  • Exchanged the VSBZ system disk $9$DKA0: because its having a substantial number of errors. The new disk failed after 7 hours, the old, rotten disk was put back in.
  • The AXP cluster hung for most of the evening and saturday morning and got back after a full reboot.

• February 27th, 1995
  
  • Increased both pagefiles on AXP612 from 200 to 400 Mbyte each. We had ran to 0 free pagefile pages with 12 active PAW sessions !

• February 11th, 1995
  
  • MOPER ALADIN works now also on AXP's. For details see the description.

• February 5th, 1995
  
  • A change in the PUBLICLOGIN procedure in January 28th broke the login procedure of all users setting DECW$USER_DEFAULTS to point to a subdirectory. Most obvious problem: the automatic startup wasn't executed.
    The PUBLICLOGIN procedure has been fixed now, everything should work as before !
    Note: All users which copied all resource files into SYS$LOGIN should delete the superfluous copies now to avoid confusion later.

• January 5th, 1995
  
  • A new version 2.4 of Mosaic (the standard WWW browser) is available. Use the DCL command $ do mosaic to start the new version. Note, that the command $ xwww will start the older version 2.0.

  • Changed the default CERNLIB version from 94A to 94B for the experiments S022, S114 and S117.

    You should

    • get a fresh login (Note: LOGIN_ALADIN changed)
    • do a REBUILD_GLTEST (Note: all lib's were recompiled)
    • relink all private PAW's (@REF_Sxxx:PAW_Sxxx_X11.BLD)
    Under an old login of if you fail to relink you'll get a message like

        -CLI-E-IMGNAME, image file $2$DKB100:[CERN.94B.][LIB]PAWSHR.EXE;10
        -SYSTEM-F-SHRIDMISMAT, ident mismatch with shareable image
    

    when starting PAW.

    The new PAW version is 2.06/00 of November 9th, 1994. For changes consult the release notes (the lastest available release notes are from PAW version 2.05/20...).

    Changes in detail:

    • Changed the S022, S114, S117 .BLD files. Use now the squeeze.opt option files, removed the isd_max and dzro_min linker options and the vaxcrtl reference.
    • Obsoleted PAWPP_S114.BLD, PAW_S114.BLD and PAW_S114L.BLD.
    • On AXP recompiled ULIB, DBASE, SETUP, ALIB, TFIT, S114 and S117.
    • On VAX recompiled ULIB, ALIB, TFIT, S114, S022 and S117.
