Abstract: In recent experiments with the ALADIN forward-spectrometer multifragment decays of heavy nuclei were studied for a wide range of projectiles and targets and for bombarding energies between 100 and 1000 MeV per nucleon. The systematics available from these data exhibit a pronounced universality for the fragmentation of excited spectators after peripheral collisions of heavy symmetric systems or after more central collisions of mass asymmetric systems.

In order to permit a statistical interpretation of the spectator decay the masses and the deposited excitation energies prior to the decay were determined from balance equations. The experimental input to these equations included the number and kinetic energies of free neutrons measured with the large-area neutron detector LAND. Results from the analysis for 197Au on 197Au at a bombarding energy of 600 MeV per nucleon will be presented.
