Second Circular ALADiN Workshop '94

                        SECOND  CIRCULAR


1. Introduction:

Our next ALADIN workshop will be held on September 25 to 28, 1994 in Rathen,
located in the National Park Saechsische Schweiz (the Saxonian part of the
Elbsandsteingebirge).

Our workshop will be held in the hotel and restaurant "Basteiblick" on the
right-hand side of the river Elbe in Rathen (Tel. 035024-232). Up to 30
participants can stay in the hotel. If more than 30 persons attend the
workshop I will have to book additional private accommodations. Therefore
please return your registration as soon as possible, but not later than Sept.
5. Do not forget, September is the peak season in the Saechsischen Schweiz.
The same request to those who will come before the 25 of Sept. or will stay 
after the workshop in Dresden. Please, give me your upper limit for a possible 
accommodation in Dresden.

We believe that the relaxed atmosphere of the house "Basteiblick" will be an 
ideal frame for the exchange of ideas. The participants are expected to arrive
on Sunday afternoon, September 25, and depart on Wednesday afternoon. We will
organize morning sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and afternoon sessions. Please
contact W.F.J. Mueller at GSI or me with respect to your intended
contribution.

2. How to reach the meeting place:

By plane: 
   Our international airport in Dresden guarantees a fast transport link to
   the world (directly or via Frankfurt M., Munich or Duesseldorf). Rental
   cars are available at the airport from the following agencies: Avis, Sixt,
   Hertz, Europcare, Autohansa, Sonnenautovermietung. From the airport go by
   taxi (ca.25.-DM) or by bus (airport-city-liner; 8.-DM) to the central
   station in Dresden (Hauptbahnhof); then by train (S-Bahn, every  half hour;
   4,-DM) to Rathen ( ca. 40 minutes - direction Schoena). Rathen is the third
   station after the town Pirna (Pirna-Obervogelgesang-Stadt Wehlen-Rathen).
   From the railway station you have to go down to the river Elbe. You cross
   the  river by the ferry-boat. From the landing-stage you see to the right
   (over a small bridge) our house "Basteiblick".

By train:
   Paricipants arriving by train should go up to the Dresden-Hauptbahnhof (the
   other station is Dresden-Neustadt). From the Dresden-Hauptbahnhof go on
   with the S-Bahn to Rathen (see above).

By car (look at the map in the mail):
   From Frankfurt/M.-Chemnitz:
   Take the motorway (Autobahn) No. A4. From this motorway you take then exit
   Dresden-Altstadt (there are four exits in Dresden: Dresden-Altstadt,
   Dresden-Neustadt, Dresden-Wilder Mann, Dresden-Nord). Follow the road signs
   to Centrum. Drive approx. 4 km (on the main road No.6; with the tram line
   parallel; pass under a railway bridge, pass over an other  bridge (small
   river); left hand side is a gas station; follow the main road  and the
   rails of the tram up to the next traffic light where you see left hand side
   a savings-bank "Sparkasse"). About 200 meter straight on behind this 
   traffic light drive under the railway bridge and then turn to the right.
   After approx. 2-3 km you see the main station "Dresden Hauptbahnhof".
   Follow the road signs Pirna (straight on). After approx. 1.5 km you see
   left hand side a gas station "MINOL". On the next cross-roads turn to the
   right. Follow the main road No. 172 to Pirna. Go on driving through
   Dresden; then passing Heidenau up to Pirna. In Pirna you see left hand side
   a gas station "DEA". At the next traffic light you must turn to the left.
   Follow the road signs  Neustadt and Bastei (the yellow route No.2 in the
   map). You cross the river  Elbe. Follow the road signs Neustadt and Bastei
   up to the village Lohmen. Then follow to Rathewalde, Porschdorf, Bad
   Schandau. In the small village Waltersdorf turn to the right to Rathen.
   Rathen is closed for cars! Nevertheless, you drive down the hill into the
   town up to the end (river Elbe). The office of the house "Basteiblick"
   distributes parking cards(parking fee 4.-DM per day).

   Attention!!  The streets in the Saechsischen Schweiz are very narrow and
   full  of bends. One has to be extremely careful!

   An other route from Pirna to Rathen is the following (the red route):
   In Pirna, follow the main road No. 172 and the road signs Tetschen (Decin)
   and Schmilka. You drive through Pirna. After approx. 6 km you see on right
   hand  side the parking for the fortress Koenigstein. After approx. 400 m
   turn off to the left (Thuermsdorf). Then drive through Thuermsdorf, Weissig
   to  Rathen.

Recommendation for people coming from outside of Germany:
   Please give me an information about your time of arrival. I can meet you at
   the airport or the central station.


3. Social program:

On Tuesday afternoon we will organize an excursion to one of the most famous
fortresses in Europe - the fortress Koenigstein (with conducted tour through
the casemates of the fortress). 

The beauty of the Elbsandsteingebirge lies in its variety. The change from
bizarre spines, wild canyonlike gorges, plains and majestic table mountains,
to dark, impenetrable forests and cliffs, crystal clear babbling brooks and
the sedately flowing Elbe creates stimulating contrasts. For the walking in
the National Park you should not forget your hiking boots.

During the workshop is plenty to do in the Saechsische Schweiz and Dresden
area and we will encourage spontaneous plans with respect to weather and
personal interests. Please, indicate in your reply which subject would be of
particular interest for you. For example, the very  good theatres in Dresden
(Semperoper)! You need 40 minutes by train from Rathen to the center of
Dresden. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get hold of  tickets for the
theatres.
