To all using BITnet ! 14-DEC-1993 The BITnet connection to the VAX/VMS cluster will be shutdown permanently by end of this year. From 1.1.94 the BITnet node DDAGSI5 will not longer exist ! All mail going out or coming in directly on BITnet MUST BE rerouted to other mailing systems. Please inform all your mail partners still using BITnet mail to DDAGSI5 of this change to avoid undeliverable mails after January 1st. * Handling outgoing mail Just to remember: BITnet mails are those emails send to addresses like jnet%"user-name@bitnet-nodename" on V8600B (or EMMA). This will not be possible after December 31st. There are three alternatives available: 1. Using Internet mail (or SMTP mail) SMTP = simple mail transfer protocol This is the prefered mode if your mail partner has an Internet connection. To send an SMTP mail use addresses of the form smtp%"user-name@internet-hostname" For nodes outside GSI you must specify the full domain address name (that means all name components and dots). You must specify hostnames, host addresses will not work. (See Note 1.) 2. Using BITnet through a BITnet gateway This is the prefered mode in case you don't know an Internet address. The mail is send via SMTP to a gateway which relays it to BITnet. To do the trick use addresses of the form smtp%"user-name%bitnet-nodename.bitnet@mvs" (in words: replace @ by % in your old bitnet address, append .bitnet@mvs and use this as an SMTP mail address. The MVS system will relay). 3. Using DECnet You can reach any HEPnet node directly by using addresses of the form GSIVAX::node-number::user-name GSIVAX is the name of a gateway VAX at GSI. You have to use DECnet node numbers ! Node names aren't maintained on GSIVAX ! (See Note 1.) Now as a practical example my local email address in all forms: jnet%"mueller@ddagsi5" direct BITnet NO FUTURE !!! smtp%"mueller%ddagsi5.bitnet@mvs" gatewayed BITnet SEE NOTE !!! smtp%"mueller@vsbz.gsi.de" SMTP, full address smtp%"mueller@vsbz" SMTP, local domain suffix dropped gsivax::62648::mueller HEpnet NOTE: The `gatewayed BITnet' form is shown to explain the format only. This form is only useful for outgoing mails to OTHER BITnet nodes. * What to tell your mail partners I have prepared a write-up which is appended to this mail. I'm sending this to all my mail partners with some Xmas greetings. * Miscellaneous - Please make sure to change your email address on all mailing lists and list servers you are getting frequently mail from via BITnet. - In case your "Personal Name" stored by the VMSmail utility contains an email address: Make sure it's of the form @vsbz.gsi.de, avoid old BITnet addresses like @ddagsi5. With best regards, Walter Note 1: In case you know an Internet address but need the name or you know the DECnet name but need to know the number for proper addressing come and see me and I'll show you the appropriate tools. Note 2: Let me know if anything in this recipe is incorrect or hard to understand. --- What to tell your mail partners -------------------------------------------- Dear Network Partner, The BITnet connection to the GSI VAX/VMS cluster, BITnet nodename DDAGSI5, will be permanently shutdown on December 31st. In case you used email addresses of the form @DDAGSI5 you will have to change to a different mail delivery system: a. On any UNIX and most other systems: Use SMTP mail with an address like @DDAGSI5.GSI.DE ( DDAGSI5 is an IP alias name ) @VSBZ.GSI.DE b. On MVS or VM systems with mailers supporting domain names use @DDAGSI5.GSI.DE Note: @DDAGSI5 implies BITnet delivery and breaks after 1.1.94 !! A full domain name like @DDAGSI5.GSI.DE will continue working ! c. On VMS systems Use SMTP if available, otherwise try HEPnet mail with an address like 14147::vsbz:: Joiner (or Jnet) type BITnet will not work after 1.1.94 ! In case all this breaks and you don't get a reply in due time just FAX it, the central GSI FAX number is (country code) 6159 71 2785 Please specify full name and division (Kernphysik III) on the cover sheet. With best regards,
